Dr. Brian K. Butcher

Dr Brian K Butcher is the owner, medical director and most senior provider at Pediatrics at Oyster Point. He was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. He graduated from Menchville High School. He received his undergraduate education at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia where he majored in chemistry. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year and graduated summa cum laude. He attended medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine and did his residency in Pediatrics at Vidant Health (East Carolina University) in Greenville, NC. He is fully Board Certified and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Although a general pediatrician by training, Dr Butcher has a special interest in mental health and development.
In 1999, he started practicing pediatrics at Peninsula Pediatrics in Newport News with his former pediatricians, Dr. Thomas Payne and Dr Thomas Morris. He practiced there for 12 years until the practice closed. In 2012, he co-founded Pediatrics at Oyster Point and took full ownership in 2016. He has been actively involved in the education of medical, nurse practitioner and physician assistant students where he serves as a preceptor and mentor to them. He has served as a mentor for Governor’s school students. He has also served on the Children’s Health Network board of directors for many years as the Peninsula representative.
Dr Butcher is the author of Little Speck, which was published in 2022. He is an advocate for children’s literacy and has actively sought to cultivate it through writing and experiential artwork in the office.
Dr Butcher has been the recipient of numerous awards including Top Doc in Virginia, courtesy of Virginia Magazine, Top 100 list of providers in the country, and Top Doc multiple times, courtesy of FindaTopDoc organization where he has been featured in a national magazine.
In his spare time, he enjoys time with his family and friends, music, gardening, traveling and all things Disney. He is married to Valerie and has 2 children, Jacob and Alyssa. He attends Menchville Baptist Church in Newport News.
